How to restore an iOS device in DFU mode

Restoring your device in DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) is a deep-level process that lets you reinstall the firmware on your iOS device. It’s typically a last resort when other restore methods have failed and your device isn’t responding.

Note

This process will erase all data on your device, so make sure you back up your data first.

Configuration steps #

Step 1 - Preparation #

  • Backup: Make a full backup of your data on iCloud or iTunes.
  • Connection: Plug your iOS device into your computer using the original USB cable.

Step 2 - Entering DFU Mode #

Step 3 - Restoring #

  • Software: Open the right app on your computer:
    • macOS: Finder
    • Windows 10 or later: “Apple Devices” app
    • Older Windows versions: iTunes
  • Recovery Mode: Your device should show up in the app as being in recovery mode.

Important tips #

  • Device Models: The button combo can vary even within the same generation of devices.
  • Updated Software: Make sure you have the latest version of Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes installed.
  • Official Docs: Always refer to Apple’s official documentation for the most accurate and up-to-date instructions for your device.

DFU mode is powerful, but use it carefully. Always back up your data before starting. If you’re unsure, check Apple’s official docs or get help from a professional.
